Untraditional weddings are just as popular as the traditional wedding. These days many brides prefer to be individual in their wedding bouquet decisions, making their day belong to them alone.
Attendants Flowers
Many brides are moving away from traditional colors as well as from traditional flowers and bouquets. In the floral industry more of this is seen every year. One change that is great on the budget, is not ordering bouquets for the matron/maid of honor and bridesmaids. They are not ignored by any means, but they are receiving corsages, hairpieces or single flowers to carry.
Corsages, worn on the wrist or the shoulder, and hairpieces are labor intense and can be just as expensive as a small bouquet. However carrying one to three roses in the wedding colors with a simple ribbon bow, can be simply elegant, as well as easy on the budget.
The Bride in Black
A color that is being seen in the industry which may astound you, is black. Many brides are dressing in black and wanting black in their bouquets. Much to the dismay of many a bride, flowers do not grow black. When you see black roses, they are either stem dyed, or painted. However, black can be used in the bouquet by adding black tulle, which is soft and will not detract from the flowers if used subtly.
If the bride is wearing a black gown, she should contrast her dress with another color for the flowers. If black flowers are used with a black dress, the flowers will not show up in the photos. A soft color like a light pink would be stunning. White would be a stark contrast. Red flowers might not show up, as they tend to be dark in photos. Yellow or orange are another choice that could be considered for a smashing contrast.
The Bridal Bouquet
There does not seem to be a trend for the untraditional bridal bouquet, hence the term untraditional. The brides come in looking for large cascades, a simple round, a presentation bouquet (this is draped over the arm), and everywhere in between. Some want gems or pearls added into the bouquet. Others want simplicity with no frills.
Calla lilies are very popular, as well as tropical flowers such as antheriums. Calla lilies come in various colors, and in a miniature size as well as the full size. For a presentation bouquet, full size calla lilies are stunning. Antheriums, a heart shaped flower, also come in two sizes. It has a variety of colors to choose from. Antheriums, like other tropical flowers, holds up well and in an arrangement can last up to two weeks.
What The Men Wear
Even though the bride is looking towards more untraditional for her flowers and colors, the men still follow suite. They wear boutineers that typically match their counter part in the wedding party.
Plan Ahead
The more untraditional you want to go, the more time you should give your florist. The florist may need to order specialty items for your wedding that is not normally carried in their shop. Not all flowers are carried in any florist shop, they need time to get them for you in the color you want.
The Reception
Here again, there is no trend. Some brides are placing a candle on the tables, with or without flowers. A bowl with fish can be done, adding a bloom on the top of the water. You can do a centerpiece in a small round dish, or a tall vase with three blooms stuck in naturally. You can also lay short stems on the table randomly.
Colors are whatever suits the bride’s fancy. It does not have to match the bridal party. For the purpose of photos you might want to at least coordinate the colors of the reception flowers with the bridal parties flowers.
Bottom line: this is your wedding and it should be what you want, so take time with your florist and make it the best day of your life.
